Migration is an essential part of the development of any region or country.
It influences the size, composition and distribution of population. The
economic survey 2017 has shown that India is witnessing a rapid increase
in internal migration. In the period 2001-11, according to Census
estimates, the annual rate of growth of labour migrants nearly doubled
relative to the previous decade, rising to 4.5 per cent per annum in 2001-
11 from 2.4 per cent in 1991- 2001. Having migrant workers is necessary
for the development of Indian economy. These migrant workers play an
important role in the development of states by providing cheap labour
in many small and medium enterprises related to manufacturing and
construction sectors. Migration has important implication for human
development. Migration normally leads to higher income, savings
and remittances with positive implication for human development and
poverty reduction.
